Marriage Visa (Non-O)
Marriage is one of life’s most significant milestones, a celebration of love that creates lasting memories. Thailand, with its diverse landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality, offers the ideal setting for couples to exchange vows. Whether you dream of a serene beach wedding or a rustic mountain retreat, Thailand’s breathtaking scenery provides the perfect backdrop for your special day.

Change Type Of Visa from Tourist to Marriage visa (Non-O)
Changing your visa status from a tourist visa (or a visa exemption) to a Non “O” visa based on marriage is a common and established process in Thailand. This visa allows a foreigner who is legally married to a Thai national to reside in the country long-term
1 Year Visa Extension
To get a one-year visa extension based on marriage in Thailand, you must have an existing Non-Immigrant “O” visa. This is not a direct application but an “extension of stay” based on your current visa status. The process is done at a local Immigration Office, and the rules are very specific.
DETAIL
Planning a wedding, especially in a foreign country, requires careful consideration. To ensure a smooth and legally binding process, it’s advisable to seek legal counsel from a local attorney. This will help you navigate the complexities of Thai marriage laws and regulations. While this may seem daunting, remember that you’ve already conquered the most challenging part: finding love.
You’re now married in Thailand, what next?
Now that you have legally married in Thailand, you are entitled to spousal rights and benefits. If your spouse is a Thai national, you may apply for a Marriage Visa, which permits you to stay and work legally in Thailand for one year. This visa offers significantly more privileges than a standard tourist visa.

To apply for a Thai Marriage Visa, you must meet the eligibility criteria and provide the following documents:
- Must be married to a Thai national
- You must provide a Marriage Certificate (Kor Ror 3) and Marriage Registration (Kor Ror 2) to prove your marriage. If the marriage took place abroad, you or your spouse must first report it to a District Office (Amphur or Khet) to get a Kor Ror 22. - 2. Proof of Monthly Income
A stable monthly income of at least 40,000 THB. This must be substantiated by a letter from your country’s embassy or consulate verifying this income.
- Supporting documents as proof of the security deposit in a Thai bank account are as follows:
- Bank Book (Passbook):
An updated bank book or passbook showing the full history of transactions. It is essential that this is updated on or very close to the day of your application.
- Official Bank Letter:
An official letter from your Thai bank confirming your account details and current balance. For your first extension, the letter should also state that the deposit of 400,000 THB has been in the account for at least 2 months prior to the visa application.
- Other documents that may be required:
- Affirmation of Freedom to Marry
Depending on the specific immigration office, a copy of your Affirmation of Freedom to Marry may be required. This document, which attests to your legal eligibility to marry, is obtained from your country’s embassy in Thailand.

Your Marriage Visa can be renewed annually as long as your marriage remains valid. However, in the event of a divorce, you will need to obtain a new visa immediately. Alternatively, if both partners are foreign nationals, one spouse may apply for a dependent visa if the other holds a valid visa acquired through other means.
——————————————————————————————
If you are married to a Thai national, you have the right to jointly purchase land in Thailand. However, in the event of a separation or divorce, your Thai spouse retains control of the land, unless you have a specific legal agreement in place.
